Tiv Kwagh-Hir Performances in Makurdi/Tivland
Tiv Kwagh-Hir Performances in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State and heart of Tivland, showcase the UNESCO-recognized puppet theatre tradition in its most concentrated urban setting. Troupes bring carved puppets, marionettes, masked characters, drummers and dancers together to dramatize Tiv folklore and contemporary social themes, most commonly during the dry season between October and April and around December.
Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, sits at the administrative and cultural heart of Tivland, and it is here that the Tiv puppet-theatre tradition of Kwagh-Hir often finds its largest and most concentrated stage.
