The story

Zaria Durbar Festival in Zaria

The Zaria Durbar is an Eid-season equestrian festival of the historic Zazzau Emirate, one of the original Hausa Bakwai city-states, in which mounted title-holders parade before the Emir in a tradition rooted in the region's centuries-old cavalry-based political history and its legacy of warrior leadership.

Zaria, historically known as Zazzau, ranks among the Hausa Bakwai, the seven founding city-states whose rulers shaped the political and military history of the Hausa lands long before the nineteenth-century jihad reorganized the region's emirates.
