Ilinden in Krushevo

Ilinden Day in Krushevo is North Macedonia's principal commemoration of the 1903 Ilinden Uprising, held each August 2 at the Meckin Kamen memorial above the town. Krushevo, a mountain town with Aromanian heritage, was the seat of the short-lived Krushevo Republic, a ten-day revolutionary government under Nikola Karev before Ottoman troops suppressed it. State officials and crowds gather for the ceremony each year.

Krushevo's Ilinden Day commemoration marks one of the defining episodes in Macedonian national history: the 1903 Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule and, within it, the establishment of the Krushevo Republic, a revolutionary government that controlled the town for roughly ten days before Ottoman troops retook it.
