The story

Vodici / Epiphany Cross Swimming in Ohrid/Nationwide

Vodici in Ohrid marks Orthodox Epiphany with worship, a blessing of Lake Ohrid and the ceremonial casting of a cross for registered swimmers to retrieve. The cold-water race is only the public climax of a religious sequence commemorating Christ's baptism. Nationwide customs differ, and Ohrid's waterfront setting, safety-controlled participation and large spectator crowd distinguish it from smaller river and neighborhood observances.

It is one of North Macedonia's most recognizable Orthodox public rituals, connecting church tradition, local identity and winter community gatherings.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The defining image joins liturgy directly to Lake Ohrid: clergy bless the water before a cross is cast from the waterfront and approved swimmers enter the January lake

02

The mystery stays covered

Retrieval carries a religious blessing rather than functioning as a prize race alone

03

The city starts moving

North Macedonia's broader Vodici tradition also recognizes consecutive Men's and Women's Vodici observances, revealing a social calendar beyond the televised plunge, although the second day does not automatically repeat Ohrid's cross-swimming program
