Sami Easter Festival in Kautokeino
The Sami Easter Festival in Kautokeino is an annual gathering of the Sami communities of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, held since the early 1970s around Easter. It grew from the traditional practice of Sami families gathering for church services before moving reindeer herds to summer pastures, and today includes the Sami Grand Prix song contest and the Reindeer Racing World Cup.
In Kautokeino, deep in Norway's Finnmark region, Easter has long meant something beyond its religious observance alone.
