The story

Hinglaj Mata Pilgrimage Festival in Hingol

The Hinglaj Mata Yatra is the largest Hindu pilgrimage in Pakistan, drawing roughly 300,000 pilgrims each spring to the Hinglaj Mata Temple, or Nani Mandir, set inside a mountain cavern within Hingol National Park on Balochistan's Makran coast, a journey many undertake as a lifelong devotion.

On the banks of the Hingol River, inside a mountain cavern deep within what is now Hingol National Park, sits one of the most geographically striking pilgrimage sites in South Asia: the Hinglaj Mata Temple, known locally as Nani Mandir.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Hinglaj Mata is one of the 51 Shakta pithas of Shaktism, the sites in Hindu tradition marking where parts of the goddess Sati's body are believed to have fallen, and one of only two such pithas located in Pakistan, the other being Sharada Peeth in Neelum Valley

02

The mystery stays covered

The temple's setting inside a natural cavern on the banks of the Hingol River, deep within a national park otherwise known for its lunar-like badlands and mud volcanoes, gives the pilgrimage an unusually dramatic desert landscape setting rarely associated with Hindu pilgrimage sites elsewhere in South Asia

03

The city starts moving

Over the last three decades the yatra has grown into a genuinely unifying event for Pakistan's scattered Hindu communities, drawing pilgrims from Sindh, Balochistan and beyond
