The story

Karachi Biennale in Karachi

Karachi Biennale, Pakistan's largest international contemporary art event, transforms heritage sites and public parks across the city into exhibition venues every two years, with free artist talks, seminars, and guided tours built each edition around a theme anchored specifically in Karachi's own social and environmental realities.

Karachi Biennale Trust was established to give Pakistan's largest city a recurring platform for contemporary visual art on an international scale, launching its first edition in 2017 with participation from Pakistani and international artists alike.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rather than concentrating in a single museum or gallery, the Biennale spreads across five or more public venues, including heritage buildings and parks, meaning the event doubles as a tour of the city's built and green spaces as much as a survey of contemporary art

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition's theme responds directly to conditions in Karachi, the 2024 edition, titled Rizq and Risk, addressed food security threatened by climate-driven flooding, giving the exhibitions a specificity that ties international-standard curatorial ambition to local urgency
