Karachi Literature Festival in Karachi

The Karachi Literature Festival is Pakistan's pioneering literary festival, founded in 2010 by Oxford University Press Pakistan and the British Council and held annually every February at the Beach Luxury Hotel. Free and open to the public, it draws thousands for author sessions, panel discussions, and book launches in English, Urdu, and Sindhi.

Before 2010, Pakistan had no major public literary festival on the scale of similar events elsewhere in South Asia, a gap that activist Sabeen Mahmud first identified and pushed to fill.

Conceived by activist Sabeen Mahmud and developed into reality by Oxford University Press Pakistan's Ameena Saiyid alongside co-founder Asif Farrukhi, the Karachi Literature Festival was Pakistan's first major litfest and its success directly inspired the country's subsequent literary festival circuit, spawning a dedicated Children's Literature Festival in 2011 and later the Islamabad Literature Festival and Teachers' Literature Festival
