Urs Bulleh Shah in Kasur

Kasur's three-day Urs of Baba Bulleh Shah honours the eighteenth-century Punjabi Sufi poet at his tomb each Islamic month of Safar, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees for qawwali, poetry recitation, and a decorated palanquin procession through the city streets, accompanied by drummers playing traditional Punjabi rhythms.

Bulleh Shah was born around 1680 in Punjab and spent much of his adult life in Kasur, where his shrine now stands, composing Punjabi verse under the kafi form that fused folk melody with mystical philosophy.
