The story

Lahore Biennale in Lahore

The Lahore Biennale is Pakistan's international contemporary art biennial, organized by the Lahore Biennale Foundation since its 2018 debut. Its third edition, Of Mountains and Seas, ran through October and November 2024 across a dozen venues including the UNESCO-listed Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens, featuring around sixty artists from thirty countries.

In 2014, a group of arts organizers in Lahore established the Lahore Biennale Foundation with the aim of creating a recurring international contemporary art event for Pakistan, a country whose formal art infrastructure had, until then, offered artists and audiences relatively few platforms of that scale.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Lahore Biennale has established itself, across just three editions since 2018, as one of South Asia's principal contemporary art platforms, a rapid ascent for an institution founded only in 2014

02

The mystery stays covered

Its practice of staging exhibitions inside UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Lahore Fort in the Walled City and, for the first time in its history for the 2024 edition, the Shalimar Gardens, embeds contemporary global art directly within centuries-old Mughal architecture rather than confining it to conventional gallery spaces

03

The city starts moving

The third edition's curatorial theme, addressing environmental degradation through site-specific work by around sixty artists from more than thirty countries, positioned the biennial explicitly within global conversations on ecology and climate rather than treating it as a regional showcase alone

What moves first

Living ritual

As a contemporary art biennial rather than a folk or religious festival

Water and renewal

Living ritual

the Lahore Biennale does not draw on inherited ritual traditions directly

The sacred route

Living ritual

but its practice of siting international contemporary art within Mughal-era heritage locations such as Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens creates a deliberate dialogue between historic Pakistani architecture and current global artistic practice
