Urs Madhu Lal Hussain in Lahore
The Urs of Madho Lal Hussain commemorates the death anniversary of 16th-century Sufi poet Shah Hussain, who is honored jointly with his devoted companion Madho Lal at their shared shrine in Baghbanpura, Lahore. This urs is popularly known as Mela Chiraghan, the Festival of Lights, marked by lamp-lighting, a growing communal bonfire, and dhol drumming.
Among Lahore's many Sufi shrines, few carry a name as unusual as Madho Lal Hussain, a joint designation that commemorates two people rather than one: Shah Hussain, the 16th-century Punjabi poet and mystic, and Madho Lal, a young Hindu man who became his devoted spiritual companion.
