The story

Urs Baba Farid in Pakpattan

Pakpattan's fifteen-day Urs of Baba Farid, held during the Islamic month of Muharram, draws an estimated two million pilgrims to the shrine of the twelfth-century Sufi saint Fariduddin Ganj-e-Shakar. The centrepiece is the once-a-year opening of the Bahishti Darwaza, the silver Gate of Paradise devotees believe washes away sins, alongside qawwali, prayer, and citywide Sufi devotion.

Fariduddin Ganj-e-Shakar, known to history as Baba Farid, was born in 1173 in Kothewal, Punjab, and became one of the most influential figures of the Chishti Sufi order, a disciple of Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki of Delhi, who was himself the successor of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer, the order's founder in South Asia.
