The story

Riwaq Biennale in Ramallah/Birzeit

Riwaq Biennale is an architecture and contemporary art biennial organized since 2005 by Riwaq, the Centre for Architectural Conservation, a Ramallah-based organization dedicated to preserving rural Palestinian architectural heritage. Directed by artist and curator Khalil Rabah, it has engaged internationally known curators, including Charles Esche for its second and third editions, to activate historic village sites across the West Bank, including in the Birzeit area.

Riwaq Biennale was established in 2005 under the direction of Khalil Rabah, an artist who, according to Wikipedia's entry on him, has served as director of the Riwaq Biennale in Ramallah since that year, while also teaching at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The biennial's defining approach is using contemporary art and architecture curation as a direct tool of heritage preservation rather than treating the two as separate fields: Riwaq itself is a center for the preservation of architectural heritage of rural Palestine, and the biennale, under director Khalil Rabah since 2005, brings international curatorial practice into direct contact with endangered historic village buildings, exemplified by Riwaq's award-winning revitalization of the Birzeit Historic Centre, which won the 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, an international prize recognizing outstanding architecture in Muslim-majority contexts
