The story

Festival Nacional del Toro Guapo in Anton

Held each mid-October in Anton, Cocle province, this folkloric festival centers on a costumed dancer who mimics a charging bull using a wooden and cloth framework, performing to the beat of the Antonian drum. Founded in 1964 by educator Armando del Rosario to preserve rural traditions, the festival mixes bullfighting parody with domestic skill contests and folk dance.

In 1964, Anton schoolteacher Armando del Rosario looked at the folk dances, work songs, and rural skills practiced around his district and worried they would disappear without a deliberate effort to record and stage them.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival was built deliberately as a rescue project rather than growing organically from an older ritual: Professor Armando del Rosario started it in 1964 specifically to document and keep alive the rural dances, work songs, and skills of Anton before they faded

02

The mystery stays covered

That origin gives the event an unusually preservationist character, with contests in tasks like coconut peeling and wood carrying performed alongside the theatrical bullfighting, treating everyday rural labor as worthy of the same stage as costumed performance

03

The city starts moving

The toro guapo dancer, who mimes a bull's charges before women in polleras and the festival queen to the specific rhythm of the Antonian drum and the metal almirez, gives Anton a folkloric character distinct from the pollera- and mask-centered festivals of the nearby Azuero peninsula
