Carnaval de Chitre in Chitre
Herrera province's capital, Chitre, celebrates the four days before Ash Wednesday with carnival activities split between the city center and the neighboring community of Monagrillo, featuring rival queens, comparsas, culecos and nightly parades, and doubling as a convenient base for visiting other Azuero-region carnivals during the same weekend.
Chitre serves as the capital of Herrera province and sits close to the geographic center of the Azuero Peninsula, which puts it within easy reach of several of Panama's better known carnival towns, including Ocu, Pese and Las Tablas.
