Festival del Bunde y Bullerengue in Darien
Held March 19 in Panama's Darien province, this festival celebrates bunde and bullerengue, Afro-descended musical and dance traditions performed primarily by women, historically tied to the Palenque del Mamoni and Santiago del Principe communities and the region's Kuna Mandinga heritage.
Bullerengue is a musical and dance tradition most strongly associated with Colombia's Caribbean coast, where it developed among descendants of the cimarrones, escaped enslaved people, who founded the Palenque de San Basilio, one of the Americas' most historically significant maroon communities.
