Festival del Sombrero Pintao in La Pintada
The Festival del Sombrero Pintao in La Pintada, Cocle, celebrates Panama's iconic hand-woven straw hat, honoring the rural artisan families of this Cocle community where the craft is most concentrated, with public weaving demonstrations, competitions and direct sales of hats ranging from simple souvenirs to fine, months-long multi-vuelta pieces.
The sombrero pintao is often confused by outsiders with the Panama hat, the pale, tightly woven hat that took Panama's name during the California gold rush and the canal-building era despite being made in Ecuador.
