Desfile de las Mil Polleras in Las Tablas

Every second Saturday of January, hundreds of women fill the streets of Las Tablas wearing the pollera, Panama's elaborate national dress, in a parade honoring the garment and the artisans who hand-make it. Established by national law in 2013 after an earlier run in Panama City and a hiatus in 2008 and 2009, the parade has become one of the clearest annual showcases of Panamanian folk costume.

The place changes

The parade's path to Las Tablas was not direct: it began in Panama City in 2003 as part of the Republic's centennial celebrations, ran through 2007, then paused entirely in 2008 and 2009 before Los Santos deputy Tito Afu helped relocate and relaunch it in Las Tablas in November 2010

That relocation matters because Los Santos province, and Las Tablas specifically, is widely regarded as the historic heartland of the pollera and its finest embroidery workshops, so the parade returned the event to the region best equipped to make it authentic

116 of December 2013 then fixed the date permanently to the second Saturday of January, giving artisans, families, and tourism operators a stable annual date to plan around rather than a moving one
