Chinese New Year Panama City in Panama City
Panama City marks Lunar New Year in and around Barrio Chino, the downtown district anchoring one of Latin America's oldest Chinese communities since laborers first arrived in 1854 to build the Panama Railroad, with lion and dragon dance troupes, strings of firecrackers, red lanterns and Cantonese-Panamanian food stalls filling the streets near the ceremonial arch.
The first Chinese laborers to reach Panama arrived on 30 March 1854 aboard the clipper Sea Witch, brought to build the Panama Railroad across the isthmus under grueling conditions that killed many of them from disease and overwork.
