Festival del Cristo Negro de Portobelo in Portobelo
Every October 21, thousands of pilgrims converge on the small Caribbean coast town of Portobelo to honor the Cristo Negro, a life-size wooden Christ statue that washed ashore under mysterious circumstances centuries ago. Some walk over 50 miles from Panama City, wearing purple robes and occasionally crawling the final stretch on their knees, to reach the Church of San Felipe.
The Cristo Negro's story begins with uncertainty.
