The Mask and Warwagira Festival, held in the East New Britain area around Kokopo and Rabaul each July, gathers Tolai and Baining performers for one of Papua New Guinea's most distinctive displays of masked ceremony. Warwagira, a Tolai word for festival, centers on the Duk Duk and Tubuan spirit figures and the Baining people's all-night fire dance.

East New Britain's Gazelle Peninsula has long supported two culturally distinct peoples living in close proximity, the coastal Tolai and the inland Baining, whose separate ceremonial traditions both became central to how the region presents itself to visitors.
