Manus Garamut and Mask Festival in Lorengau
The Manus Garamut and Mask Festival centers on two documented elements of Manus Province's material culture, the carved slit-log garamut drum used for both music and long-distance communication, and traditional carved masks, brought together for public performance in Lorengau.
Manus Province is a scatter of islands in the Bismarck Sea, geographically and culturally distinct from mainland Papua New Guinea, with its own Austronesian-language communities and a history shaped as much by seafaring and inter-island exchange as by the highland trade and warfare patterns that dominate discussion of the mainland.
