A century-old carnival in Encarnacion, Paraguay, featuring parading floats, competing samba-style schools, and costumed dancers along a purpose-built sambodrome over multiple weekend nights each summer, making it the country's largest and most internationally recognized carnival celebration by far, earning the city its Capital of Paraguayan Carnival nickname.

Encarnacion sits on the Parana River in southern Paraguay, a city whose late nineteenth-century prosperity, fueled by European immigration and the arrival of the Carlos Antonio Lopez Railroad, gave it the nickname the Pearl of the South.
