The story

Festival Kamba Kua in Fernando de la Mora

An Afro-Paraguayan patronal festival held in the Kamba Kua neighborhood of Fernando de la Mora, honoring Saint Balthazar each January with drumming, candombe dance, processions, and novenas performed by descendants of Afro-Uruguayan lancers who settled there in 1820 alongside Jose Gervasio Artigas, in one of Paraguay's most distinctive celebrations.

In 1820, a contingent of Afro-descendant lancers arrived in Paraguay accompanying Jose Gervasio Artigas, the Uruguayan independence leader who spent his final decades in exile there.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kamba Kua's community descends from Afro-descendant lancers who arrived in Paraguay in 1820 with Uruguayan independence hero Jose Gervasio Artigas, and the neighborhood's name, meaning Cave of the Blacks in Guarani, marks a specific historic site tied to that settlement

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by the Grupo Tradicional San Baltazar, the festival is described as the principal expression of Afro-descendant culture in Paraguay and is recognized regionally across Latin America, reaching a 34th consecutive edition in early 2025
