Celebrated each May 3, Kurusu Ara, the Day of the Cross, is a Guarani-Catholic rural tradition observed across Paraguayan communities, including notable candlelit gatherings on hillsides such as Cerro Acahay, where crosses are decorated and venerated as part of a syncretic devotion tied to the theological significance of the Holy Cross.
Kurusu Ara takes its name directly from Guarani, kurusu for cross and ara for day, and the observance itself reflects that same blending of Guarani cultural framework and Catholic devotional content found throughout much of rural Paraguay's religious calendar.
