Festival del Lago Ypacarai in Ypacarai
A long-running music festival held beside Lake Ypacarai in the town of the same name, celebrating Paraguayan guarania and polka through concerts, folkloric dance, and recurring tributes to guarania's creator, composer Jose Asuncion Flores, across more than fifty editions despite past political censorship of the genre.
Lake Ypacarai, ringed by the towns of Ypacarai, San Bernardino and Areguá, holds a particular place in Paraguayan cultural memory thanks to Recuerdos de Ypacarai, one of the country's most famous guarania compositions, and each year the town of Ypacarai channels that association into a music festival held at Club 24 de Mayo or near the local railway station.
