Carnaval de los Dioses Apu Tusuy in Abancay
Abancay's February Carnaval Abanquino unfolds beneath Apu Ampay, the sacred mountain regarded in local Andean cosmology as the guardian spirit of the city, whose slopes rise above the Santuario Nacional de Ampay just north of town. A festival themed around the Apu Tusuy, or 'dance of the mountain gods,' draws on this cosmology within the wider Carnival calendar.
