The Senor Cautivo de Ayabaca festival, centered on October 13 each year in the northern Piura highlands near the Ecuadorian border, draws one of Peru's largest religious pilgrimages to a sculpture that local legend says was carved by mysterious craftsmen under strange conditions in 1751.

High in the Piura region's northern mountains near the Ecuadorian border, the town of Ayabaca is home to one of Peru's most storied religious traditions, centered on a wooden sculpture known as the Senor Cautivo, depicting Christ at the moment of his capture in Gethsemane, abandoned by his disciples.
