Carnaval Ayacuchano is the pre-Lenten Carnival of Ayacucho, an Andean city famous for its colonial churches, featuring huayno music, costumed comparsa dance troupes, and street games of water and flour throwing rooted in Quechua agricultural fertility customs layered with Catholic pre-Lenten tradition.
Ayacucho, a city in Peru's south-central highlands known for its thirty-three colonial churches, one for each year of the life of Christ, and for major Holy Week observances later in the Catholic calendar, holds a Carnival season distinct enough to have earned its own regional identity: Carnaval Ayacuchano.
