The Danza de Tijeras Festival brings Ayacucho's scissors dancers, called danzaq, together for competitive duels known as atipanakuy, where barefoot performers execute acrobatic feats, balancing acts, and self-piercing displays to the sound of violin and harp. Rooted in the Chanka highlands and recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the festival showcases a tradition Peru's Instituto Nacional de Cultura protected as national patrimony in 1995.

In the highlands of Ayacucho, a dancer known as a danzaq steps into a town plaza gripping two hand-forged metal blades, a hembra and a macho, that ring out in sharp percussive clashes as a violinist and harpist set the pace.
