Carnaval de Cajamarca is widely regarded as Peru's most famous and largest Carnival celebration, a boisterous pre-Lenten festival held every February featuring citywide water and paint battles, unsha tree ceremonies, comparsa competitions and the symbolic mock burial of Ño Carnavalon that closes the week-long celebration.
Of the many Carnival celebrations held across Peru's Andean cities in the weeks before Lent, Cajamarca's is consistently ranked as the country's largest and most exuberant, drawing visitors from across Peru and abroad to a highland city otherwise known for colonial architecture and its role in the final days of the Inca empire.
