On the night of May 2 into May 3, Cusco's Cruz Velacuy fills chapel courtyards and hillside crosses with candlelight, paper ornaments, and music as families keep vigil over wooden crosses tied with fresh flowers. The custom, part of Peru's broader Cruz de Mayo tradition, ends the next day with crosses carried in procession to local churches.

Across much of Peru, the night of May 2 into May 3 belongs to the wooden crosses that stand watch over hillside chapels, home altars, and neighborhood shrines, part of a Catholic feast known formally as the Invencion de la Santa Cruz and celebrated informally as the Cruz de Mayo.
