Los Negritos de Huanuco in Huanuco

Los Negritos de Huánuco is a masked folk dance performed across the Huánuco region during the Christmas and Epiphany season, tracing back to enslaved Africans brought to the region in the mid-16th century who were granted holiday freedom to visit nativity scenes and churches. Rival cofradías, or brotherhoods, of dancers now compete through the streets, and the dance is considered Huánuco's iconic tradition.
