San Juan is the largest and most important festival in the Peruvian Amazon, celebrated every June 24 in Iquitos and across Loreto region in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Rooted in the saint's baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, the day centers on river-adjacent rituals, traditional Amazonian dance and music, and the citywide sharing of juane, giving Iquitos its single biggest annual gathering.

San Juan, the feast of Saint John the Baptist on June 24, arrived in the Peruvian Amazon through Catholic missionary activity following the Spanish conquest, but the celebration that developed in Iquitos and across Loreto region took on a distinctly Amazonian character quite different from equivalent feast days on the Peruvian coast or in the Andes.
