Santa Rosa de Lima Festival, celebrated August 30 as a national holiday, honors Peru's patron saint and the first person born anywhere in the Americas to be canonized, with pilgrimages to her sanctuary in central Lima and the tradition of dropping written wishes into her hermitage well.

On August 30 each year, Peru observes a public holiday honoring Santa Rosa de Lima, born Isabel Flores de Oliva in the city in 1586, whose short life of intense religious devotion, ascetic practice and care for the sick and poor made her one of colonial Lima's most revered figures well before her death in 1617 at the age of thirty-one.
