Virgen de la Puerta Otuzco in Otuzco
The Virgen de la Puerta festival, celebrated December 13 to 16 in the highland town of Otuzco near Trujillo, draws one of northern Peru's largest annual pilgrimages to honor the region's beloved patroness, a colonial-era wooden image known affectionately by generations of devotees as the Mamita de Otuzco.
In the highland town of Otuzco, roughly seventy-five kilometers northeast of Trujillo, a seventeenth-century wooden statue of the Virgin Mary known as the Virgen de la Puerta has become the focus of one of northern Peru's most significant annual pilgrimages.
