Virgen del Carmen de Paucartambo in Paucartambo

Every mid-July, the small Andean town of Paucartambo, east of Cusco, stages one of Peru's most distinctive religious festivals for the Virgen del Carmen, patron of the region's mestizo population. Masked dance troupes representing different social and historical archetypes perform through the streets, including saqra devil dancers who climb onto rooftops during the procession.

East of Cusco, in a valley town small enough to walk across in twenty minutes, Paucartambo hosts a festival that many Peruvians who have seen both consider more intense and more authentically preserved than Cusco's larger Inti Raymi.
