Magayon Festival in Albay
Magayon Festival is a month-long provincial celebration in Albay, generally held in May, built around the legend of Daragang Magayon, the beautiful maiden said to have been transformed into Mount Mayon, and showcasing the province's towns, produce and culture.
The name Magayon comes from Daragang Magayon, a Bicolano legend describing a beautiful maiden pursued by a rejected, powerful suitor, whose story ends in tragedy involving her true love and, in most versions, her own death, after which a mound of earth said to cover her and her beloved is described as having grown over time into the volcano now known as Mount Mayon, whose name is popularly explained as deriving from Magayon, meaning beautiful in the local language.
