Balanghai Festival commemorates the ancient balangay boats excavated in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, wooden plank vessels carbon-dated to as early as 320 CE that document the seafaring migrations and trade networks of early Filipino communities. Celebrated each May alongside the city's charter anniversary, the festival ties Butuan's modern identity directly to its pre-colonial maritime trading past.

In 1976, news spread that preserved remnants of ancient wooden boats had been found in the floodplains of the Masao River in Ambangan, a barangay of Libertad in Butuan City.
