Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in Manila/Pasay

Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a Manila-based showcase for Filipino independent cinema, founded in 2004 and first held in 2005 through a partnership between the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Film Development Council, and university filmmakers. Its production grants have helped fuel what critics call the Pinoy Indie New Wave over the past two decades.

In 2004, a coalition of Philippine cultural and film institutions, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the University of the Philippines Film Institute, and the Philippine Multi-Media Systems Inc., came together to found the Cinemalaya Foundation, with the explicit goal of creating a new pathway for independent Filipino filmmaking.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Cinemalaya distinguishes itself from other Philippine film festivals by directly funding production, offering grants for up to ten full-length feature films that then compete for the festival's top prize, rather than simply screening already-completed work

02

The mystery stays covered

This grant-driven model helped launch what has been called the Pinoy Indie New Wave, giving early-career and independent filmmakers access to production resources they might not otherwise secure, and it has become a key project of the Cultural Center of the Philippines rather than a purely commercial festival

What moves first

Living ritual

The festival continues a now two-decades-long institutional commitment by the Cultural Center of the Philippines to funding and showcasing new independent Filipino cinema outside the mainstream studio system
