Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival in Surigao City
Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival honors Surigao City's patron San Nicolas de Tolentino every September 10, its name combining a word for downpour with a phrase meaning very good, rooted in pre-Hispanic Mamanwa and Manobo rain-dance rituals. The festival began in 1984 as a thanksgiving observance following the destruction of Typhoon Nitang.
In 1984, Surigao City was still recovering from the destruction wrought by Typhoon Nitang, one of the deadliest storms to strike the region in living memory.
