Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in Zamboanga City
Fiesta Hermosa, the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, is held each October in Zamboanga City in honor of Nuestra Senora del Pilar, the city's patroness, combining a Marian religious observance with the Regatta de Zamboanga sailboat race, street dance and the city's distinctive Chavacano heritage and culture.
Zamboanga City occupies a distinct place in Philippine history as a fortified Spanish colonial outpost on the western tip of Mindanao, established around Fort Pilar in the seventeenth century in a region otherwise defined by long-standing Muslim sultanates, and the city's population developed Chavacano, a Spanish-derived creole language found nowhere else in the country in such widespread daily use, as a lasting marker of that colonial-era garrison history.
