The story

Fotofestiwal Lodz in Lodz

Fotofestiwal is an international photography festival held every May in Lodz since 2001, one of the first dedicated photography events in Poland, using the city's post-industrial architecture as exhibition space for curated photographic themes. Running throughout May each year, it fills Lodz's post-industrial factories, tenements, and villas with curated exhibitions and a dense program of talks and workshops.

Fotofestiwal, formally the International Festival of Photography in Lodz, held its first full edition in 2002, following preparatory work in 2001 that placed it among the earliest dedicated photography events organized in Poland at a time when the country's photographic culture was still building independent institutions distinct from the state-run cultural bodies of the communist period.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

As one of the earliest dedicated photography festivals in Poland, Fotofestiwal helped establish a national infrastructure for photographic exhibition and discourse that did not previously exist at this scale, and it remains a founding member of both the Photo Festival Union, a European network of photography festivals, and the international Festival of Light organization

02

The mystery stays covered

Its exhibitions are staged specifically within Lodz's distinctive post-industrial architecture, old factories, historic tenement buildings, and villas, giving the photography on display a physical setting shaped by the same twentieth-century industrial history the city itself represents
