Gory Literatury Festival in Nowa Ruda/Sudety

Festiwal Gory Literatury is a literary festival based in Nowa Ruda and the Radkow area of the Sudety mountains, running since 2015 and organized since 2021 by the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation, hosted by the Nobel laureate herself alongside writer and critic Karol Maliszewski each summer.

Nowa Ruda sits in the Sudety foothills of Lower Silesia, a former mining and textile town that might have remained a footnote on Poland's cultural map were it not for its connection to Olga Tokarczuk, the Nobel Prize-winning novelist who lives in the region and has drawn much of her fiction from its landscape.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Running since 2015, the festival pairs literature with the region's hiking landscape, offering author talks, translation workshops through its Tokarczuk Translators' Festival strand, and a Flying People's University program of writing, film, and culinary workshops

02

The mystery stays covered

A dedicated children's edition, Male Gory Literatury, runs alongside the main program, and since 2019 the festival has belonged to Poland's Coalition of Summer Literary Festivals

03

The city starts moving

Its direct link to Olga Tokarczuk, who both hosts sessions and lends her foundation's name to the organizing body since 2021, gives it a level of literary prestige unusual for a festival based in a small Sudety mountain town rather than a major city
