The story

Malta Festival Poznan in Poznan

Malta Festival Poznan is one of Poland's major international theatre festivals, founded in 1991 around Lake Malta, an artificial lake created in 1952 on the Warta River. What began with eight performances by Polish and foreign ensembles has grown into a multi-week event spanning theatre, music, film and dance, staged across the lake's rowing-venue grounds and the wider city.

Malta Festival Poznan owes its existence to an unusual piece of civic leftover: after Poznan hosted the World Canoeing Championships in 1990, city authorities were left with a newly renovated rowing venue on Lake Malta, an artificial lake built in 1952 along the Warta River, and no clear ongoing use for it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Malta's origin story ties it unusually closely to a specific piece of infrastructure: the festival exists because Poznan's 1990 World Canoeing Championships left behind a renovated rowing venue that Orkiestra Osmego Dnia director Michal Merczynski suggested repurposing for outdoor performance

02

The mystery stays covered

That grounding in reclaimed public space shaped the festival's identity as a site for large-scale outdoor theatre, street parades and spontaneous happenings that spill into markets, streets and squares rather than staying confined to conventional stages

03

The city starts moving

Over three decades it became the first venue in Poland to present major works by boundary-pushing theatre-makers such as Pippo Delbono and Romeo Castellucci, establishing Malta as a launching point for experimental theatrical languages entering Polish cultural life well before they reached other Polish stages
