The story

GUIdance Guimaraes in Guimaraes

GUIdance is Guimarães's international contemporary dance festival, held each February since the early 2010s across the city's main cultural venues. Now well into its second decade of editions, it brings Portuguese and international choreographers together for a program built around new creation rather than established repertoire. Organized largely through the Centro Cultural Vila Flor, it has grown into one of the country's most consistent contemporary dance platforms.

Guimarães carries the unofficial title of the birthplace of Portugal, its walled medieval core and hilltop castle credited in national memory with the country's founding in the twelfth century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

GUIdance stands out among Portuguese arts festivals for treating Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage city better known for its medieval castle and historic center, as a serious stage for contemporary dance rather than a folkloric backdrop

02

The mystery stays covered

Editions bring together choreographers spanning different generations and geographies, with recent themes touching migration, memory and community, and flamenco given dedicated space alongside more experimental work

03

The city starts moving

A parallel public program invites residents to dance themselves through sessions such as Bailar em Casa, blurring the line between spectator and participant

04

The water draws everyone in

The festival's scale stays deliberately intimate, spread across a small number of venues, which lets audiences encounter both established names and emerging voices in close quarters
