The story

Maravilha Festival in Horta/Faial

Festival Maravilha is a multidisciplinary street arts festival held in Horta, on Faial Island in the Azores, since 2016, mixing live music, contemporary circus, and street theater with performances staged on and above the water of Horta's famous transatlantic sailing marina, run jointly by three local cultural associations each summer.

Horta, on the island of Faial in the Azores, has long occupied an unusual place on the map of transatlantic sailing: for generations, yachts crossing between Europe and the Americas have stopped at its marina to resupply, and sailors have marked their passage by painting murals directly onto the harbor's stones, a custom sailors say brings good luck for the next leg of the voyage.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its use of Horta marina, a legendary Atlantic crossing stopover where sailors have long painted murals on the docks, as a performance space: acts including musician Noiserv have played concerts staged for a floating audience out on the water between Porto Pim beach and the marina

02

The mystery stays covered

Run jointly by three Faial cultural associations, Fazendo, Teatro de Giz, and Musica Vadia, it grew out of the 2015 centenary of the Fazendo cultural journal, moving from a biennial to an annual event over its first decade

03

The city starts moving

Programming explicitly frames itself around welcoming those who arrive by sea, those who depart, and those who stay on the island, tying the festival directly to Horta's identity as a mid-Atlantic crossroads
