Lazarim Carnival in Lazarim
Lazarim Carnival, known locally as Entrudo de Lazarim, is famous across Portugal for its handcrafted wooden masks and satirical straw effigies, staged in a small mountain village near Lamego each pre-Lenten season. Confirmed for 14-17 February 2026, it is considered one of the country's most authentic rural Carnival traditions.
In the mountains near Lamego, in a village small enough that most Portuguese have never visited but many have heard of, Carnival looks nothing like the sequined, imported spectacle found in the country's bigger towns.
