The story

FOLIO Obidos in Obidos

FOLIO is Obidos's international literary festival, held each October since 2015 in the walled medieval town that UNESCO named a Creative City of Literature that same year. Built around a different curatorial theme every year, it mixes author panels, illustration, concerts, exhibitions, and education programs across the streets and historic buildings of Obidos.

FOLIO exists because of a designation, not the other way around.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

FOLIO is built directly on Obidos's identity as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, a designation the town received in December 2015, the same year the festival launched

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than a single fixed format, the festival organizes its program into distinct chapters: FOLIO Autores for author panels and roundtables, Folia for concerts and performance, FOLIO Ilustra for illustration, and FOLIO Educa, which runs an international education seminar, a national meeting of reading groups, and a silent reading party

03

The city starts moving

Recent editions have drawn more than 100,000 visitors and hosted several hundred authors, with a 2026 edition announced to include Nobel laureate Jon Fosse

04

The water draws everyone in

Each year the festival adopts a new theme, from Risco, meaning risk, to Fronteiras, meaning borders, keeping the program from repeating itself
