Ovar Carnival in Ovar
Ovar Carnival is a municipal street carnival in Ovar, near Aveiro, nicknamed the Vitamin of Joy and run almost entirely by community volunteers. Centered on competitive samba schools rather than religious pageantry, its multi-week program builds toward two Great Carnival Corsos, drawing well over one hundred thousand spectators to a town of purpose-built costume workshops known as the Aldeia do Carnaval.
Ovar's relationship with Carnival is older than its modern reputation for samba suggests.
